Delivers an anchor course on how languages are taught and how adults learn a new language. Topics include:

  • Using student’s first language strategically

Teaching Adult ELLs Who Are Emergent Readers

This course takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete.

Provides strategies for teaching adult ELLs who have not been schooled in their home language and are beginning to acquire print literacy. Topics include:

  • Uniqueness of adult emergent readers with limited formal schooling
  • Strategies for teaching literacy
  • Identification, placement, and assessment of learners with limited formal schooling

Formative Assessment to Inform Quality Adult ESL Instruction

This course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

Offers a review of effective ways to use meaningful, formative assessments and useful tools and processes for guiding instruction. Topics include:

  • An overview of formative assessment in language teaching
  • Assessment activities to engage learners and help them monitor their progress
  • Oral and written feedback techniques

The Role of Culture in the Education of Adult English Language Learners

This course takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

Provides techniques and strategies to create a culturally inclusive learning environment and facilitate cross-cultural understanding among learners.

Topics include:

  • The role of culture in language and literacy development
  • Cultural competence in mutlticultural classrooms
  • Cultural assumptions and dilemmas in classrooms with adult ELLs

Principles of Second Language Teaching: Planning, Implementing, and Managing Instruction

This course takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete.

Explores the basics of instructional planning and execution in adult ESL classrooms using the Communicative Language Teaching approach and other student-centered instructional practices.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the communicative needs of adult ELLs
  • Planning communicative language teaching lessons
  • Implementing and managing adult ESL instruction
